Bank Holiday Alert: Banks to Remain Closed in Many States on August 27 for Ganesh Chaturthi
New Delhi, August 26, 2025 – If you are planning a bank visit this week, you may need to reschedule. According to the holiday list issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks in several states will remain closed on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, due to Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. In some states, the holiday will extend to Thursday, August 28, as different festivals coincide with the occasion.
This week will see multiple bank holidays, starting with a closure on Monday. Now, with Ganesh Chaturthi falling midweek, banking services will be unavailable in many regions. Customers are advised to check the state-wise holiday schedule to avoid inconvenience.
Where Will Banks Remain Closed on August 27?On Wednesday, August 27, banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, and Vijayawada. The closures are being observed in line with regional festivities such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Samvatsari, and Ganesh Puja.
The next day, August 28, some states will continue the holiday due to celebrations like Ganesh Chaturthi (second day) and Nuakhai, a traditional harvest festival in Odisha.
It is important to note that these holidays are state-specific. Banks will operate as usual in regions where these festivals are not being observed.
Why Are These Holidays Significant?-
Ganesh Chaturthi:
One of the most important Hindu festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and prosperity. Devotees install idols of Lord Ganesha at homes and temples, offering prayers for success, happiness, and prosperity. The festival is especially popular in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Goa. -
Samvatsari (Jain Community):
For Jains, the same day is celebrated as Samvatsari, a day of forgiveness and self-purification. Followers seek forgiveness from family, friends, and even strangers by saying "Micchami Dukkadam," which means "May all the wrongs done by me be forgiven."
These festivals reflect India’s cultural diversity, which is why RBI recognizes them under its official bank holiday list.
What Services Will Still Work?Even though physical bank branches will remain shut, digital banking services will be fully functional. Customers can continue to access facilities such as:
-
Net Banking
-
Mobile Banking
-
UPI Transactions
-
ATM Withdrawals
This ensures that essential financial services are not disrupted despite the holidays. However, if you need in-branch assistance such as cheque clearance or document submissions, it is advisable to plan your visit accordingly.
