Sarfaraz's 1st Test 100 'slap in the face' for selectors; fans say 'moment to remember'

Send Push

A little over a couple of weeks ago, Sarfaraz Khan slammed a double ton in the Irani Cup as Mumbai defeated Rest of India to lift the trophy. Little did we know it was a sign of things to come. There was already outrage among fans that he had been left out of the Tests vs Bangladesh because KL Rahul was back. This was after a much-awaited debut in the series vs England where he produced some great knocks.

But as they say, one man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity. Sarfaraz got a place when Shubman Gill had to sit out the first Test vs New Zealand due to a stiff neck. He flopped in the first innings with zero but then slammed his maiden Test century in the second innings. As India fought back after conceding a 356-run lead, Sarfaraz led the way.

First, the 26-year-old put on 136 runs with Virat Kohli (70) for the third wicket and then shared another fruitful partnership with Rishabh Pant who also made a half-century. Early on the fourth morning, he reached his first Test 100. A moment to remember.

It was also a ‘slap’ in the selectors’ face. The ones who had dropped him when he was in form. Having been overlooked for years, Sarfaraz is finally making his case as to why he deserves to be picked. It was a message to the selection panel as to not make the mistake of dropping him again. Fans certainly had a lot to say as the internet buzzed reacting to his 100. People praised his knock and hailed his years of dedication. Take a look:

He is also making a strong case to ensure that he is on the plane to Australia. That Test series starts on November 22 and it will be his first outside India. A good performance Down Under will go a long way in cementing his place in the Test side.

They say better late than never and Sarfaraz is making that proverb true. He may be a relatively late bloomer, but he is now blooming in full flow. Good news for Team India and great entertainment for the fans. His career is in its infancy as he is just four Tests old and there is a long way to go. But, for the moment, Sarfaraz is on the right track.
