"Bishnoi was his idol": From bright student to alleged killer of Baba Siddique, the story of Dharmaraj Kashyap

Dharmaraj Kashyap, the 20-year-old from Bahraich who is an accused in the murder of political leader Baba Siddique, was fairly good at academics, scoring 78% in his Class 10 exams, ToI reported on October 22.

Kashyap family had hoped he would pursue a medical career. However, influenced by social media and idolising gangsters like Lawrence Bishnoi, he chose a different path, the report (by Arvind Chauhan) said.

Dharmaraj’s elder brother, Anurag Kashyap, shared insights with TOI, saying, “Dharmaraj is now frightened. He succumbed to the allure of social media... I reproach myself for not being able to look after my younger brother.”

Problems escalated when Dharmaraj, also known as Rocky Kashyap, failed to appear for his intermediate exams and subsequently left for Pune with his friend Shivkumar Gautam. Gautam, now the main suspect in Siddique’s murder, had been involved in the scrap business in Pune.

Anurag revealed to ToI that after the shooting on October 12, Mumbai police questioned him and allowed him to speak with Dharmaraj. Dharmaraj mentioned that Shubham Lonkar, a sharpshooter from the Bishnoi gang, was his main contact.

Anurag added, “The directives for targets assigned to him and other gang members originated from the upper echelons of the gang, with minimal information divulged about the intended target.”

Dharmaraj, the youngest of six siblings, was looked after by Anurag, who runs a garments store. Before the scrap trade, Shivkumar had worked as a food delivery agent. Anurag clarified that neither Dharmaraj nor Shivkumar showed violent tendencies while living in their village, ToI's report said.
