An Urdu teacher, Mohammad Alamgir, visiting a society in Cossings Republik, Ghaziabad, for a private tuition was allegedly abused, heckled and forced to chant " Jai Shri Ram" on Tuesday. He eventually had to get off the elevator, reported TOI.

Police arrested Manoj Kumar, 36, on Wednesday and charged him under BNS sections for wrongful restraint and intentional insult.

Alamgir told police that Kumar launched into an unprovoked verbal attack on him when he saw him waiting for the elevator on the ground floor of Panchsheel Wellington.

He said the accused first "first looked at me in a strange manner" and asked him where he was going.

When Alamgir said he taught Urdu at a flat on the 16th floor, Kumar allegedly told him to say "Jai Shri Ram."

Once he ignored Kumar, his behaviour turned more aggressive with more questions being asked.

"I was surprised and didn't say anything. When the lift stopped on the first floor, he pushed me out. Then he called another resident and told him, ‘Musalman kabse aane lage is society mein' (since when have Muslims started coming to this society?)."

Alamgir further accused a second resident of refusing to let him go up to the 16th floor. Others intervened later and requested him to leave, citing "the current atmosphere".

"I called my student's parents and once the call ended, he (Kumar) once again told me to say: ‘Jai Shri Ram'. When I didn't respond, he and the other resident took me to the ground floor and became aggressive. Then the security guard of the tower and a third resident came. They took my number and asked me to leave the society immediately. I left without taking the class," Alamgir said.

An FIR has been registered against Kumar under sections 126 (2) (punishment for wrongful restraint), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of BNS, said Wave City ACP Lipi Nagayach.

"We started an investigation and identified the accused as Manoj Kumar, who lives in the same tower," the ACP told TOI.

She added that Kumar told police during interrogation "he was under the influence of alcohol" at the time of the incident.

"He said when he saw the teacher, he asked some questions, but when the teacher didn't answer, he became aggressive. He was produced in court and sent to jail. Any other accused will be identified," Nagayach said.
