They married in 1971 after a brief courtship and parted ways in 1988. However, Randhir and Babita Kapoor never filed for divorce. In a candid interview with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Kareena Kapoor Khan spoke about the equation between her parents today and explained even when they drifted apart, there was no loss of goodwill. She also revealed her parents have chosen to spend their twilight years together.
“They’ve decided that they want to just spend their old age holding hands together because that’s where their journey started and that’s exactly where they are together,” she explained.
Describing this reunion as a “divine intervention,” Kareena said, “That is something that has come full circle for Karisma and me.”
Babita’s Life After Marriage: A Career Halt
Following her marriage to actor Randhir Kapoor, Babita chose to step away from the spotlight and bid farewell to her flourishing film career. Initially, everything in their married life seemed peaceful and content. However, challenges soon emerged that would change the course of their relationship.
Decline in Career and Struggles at Home
As the 1980s unfolded, Randhir Kapoor’s acting career began to falter. His movies failed to leave a mark at the box office, and this professional slump deeply affected him. As a way of coping, Randhir gradually turned to alcohol, which only worsened the situation. The actor has publicly acknowledged that his increasing dependence on alcohol and his erratic behavior were significant factors in the growing distance between him and Babita. His late nights and heavy drinking created tensions that neither partner could ignore.
Different Lifestyles, Different Expectations
Randhir once reflected on the differences that drove them apart. He admitted that Babita disapproved of his lifestyle, while he, in turn, was unwilling to change. Despite being in a relationship founded on love, the couple found themselves at odds with one another’s expectations and values. Yet amid this emotional turmoil, they chose to focus on what mattered most—their daughters.
“She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late, which was something she didn’t like. And I didn’t want to live the way she wanted, and she couldn’t accept me as I am, though it was a love marriage. So it’s okay. We had two lovely children to look after. She brought them up in the best way, and they have excelled in their careers. What else could I have asked for as a father?” he told Hindustan Times.
Parenting Through Separation
Though they have lived in separate residences since 1988, Randhir and Babita never allowed their personal issues to impact their children. They raised Karisma and Kareena Kapoor with immense love, care, and commitment. Today, both daughters are celebrated figures in Indian cinema. Despite their separation, Randhir and Babita continue to share moments together on special occasions, often seen in family gatherings and smiling for photographs.
Why They Never Divorced
Although the couple parted ways over three decades ago, they never opted for a legal divorce. Randhir once expressed that there was no need for it—neither had plans to remarry, and they had already built a shared legacy through their children.
In an interview with HT, the veteran actor stated, “Divorce for what? Why should we head for divorce? I don’t intend to get married again, and neither does she."
Randhir and Babita appeared in two films, ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’ and ‘Jeet.’
