Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, along with her fitness and glowing skin, is now also in the news for her oral hygiene routine. Recently, she revealed that she doesn't brush her teeth in the morning, but instead oil pulls with coconut oil, cloves, and herbs. Jacqueline says this is a great way to detoxify the mouth and strengthen the gums. She believes that oral health is directly related to our stomach and gut health, so it's important to start the day with oral care.
In an interview with CurlyTales, Jacqueline said, "The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is focus on my oral hygiene. It involves several steps. It's not just about brushing my teeth. I oil pull with coconut oil, cloves, and various herbs. I do this for about 5 minutes."
The "Housefull" actress further added, "It's a great way to detoxify the mouth, strengthen the gums, and cleanse the entire mouth. It's also directly related to the health of our stomach and intestines. Everything is interconnected."
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice in which coconut or sesame oil is swished around in the mouth for 5 to 10 minutes. Dental expert Dr. Holika Devikar (Plus Dental Clinic, Thane) told The Indian Express that this process loosens plaque on teeth, promotes healthy gums, and reduces bad breath. If done regularly, it acts as a natural detox for the mouth. However, it can't replace brushing, but rather be incorporated into your daily routine as an add-on.
Tongue cleaning is also important.
Jacqueline considers tongue cleaning a crucial part of her routine. According to experts, the tongue contains millions of bacteria that cause bad breath, plaque, and taste changes. Dr. Holika says, "If you don't clean your tongue, up to 80 percent of the bacteria that cause bad breath remain. The tongue should be cleaned daily with a tongue scraper or the back of a toothbrush."
Why Flossing Is Important
Most cavities occur between the teeth, so flossing is crucial. Daily flossing can reduce the risk of cavities by about 50 percent. It cleans areas where a toothbrush can't reach. For those with braces or sensitive gums, a water flosser is a good option, but it can't completely replace traditional flossing.
Expert Advice
Dr. Holika says that brushing only cleans about 40 percent of the tooth surface. It's important to pay extra attention to cleaning the rest of the area, especially between the teeth and along the gum line.
The Secret to a Healthy Smile
Jacqueline Fernandez's routine demonstrates that a beautiful and healthy smile requires more than just white teeth, but also comprehensive oral care. Her routine includes steps like oil pulling, tongue cleaning, and flossing, which help detoxify the mouth from within and maintain overall health.
If you want a fresh and healthy smile like Jacqueline's, start your day with proper oral hygiene and make caring for your teeth a daily habit.
