Mumbai: In a surprising turn in Maharashtra politics, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray has shown interest in joining hands with his cousin Raj Thackeray, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). This comes ahead of the upcoming elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s largest civic body.

The reason the talk of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray coming together started again on Saturday is because of recent statements made by both leaders. Raj Thackeray gave an interview on actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar’s YouTube channel, where he spoke positively about the idea.

Raj Thackeray said, “The fights and differences between us are very small compared to the bigger issues. Maharashtra is much more important. For the sake of Maharashtra and Marathi people, these issues don’t matter. I don’t think it’s difficult for us to come together or work together. But it depends on the willpower. It’s not just about what I want we need to think about the bigger picture. In fact, I feel all Marathi people across parties should unite and form a single party.”

Usually known for not responding quickly or answering calls, Uddhav Thackeray this time reacted immediately to Raj’s comments. He gave a positive but conditional response.

“I’m also ready to move past small fights. I call on all Marathi people to come together for Maharashtra’s good. But you can’t support the BJP on one side and then talk about compromise or opposition later. Anyone who stands in the way of Maharashtra will not be welcomed or supported that must be clear from the start. I’ve ended the fights from my side, but we need to decide these things first. Marathi people must decide , will Hindutva benefit more by standing with me or with the BJP? We should not meet or promote corrupt people knowingly or unknowingly. First, we must take an oath in front of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that we will not do this and only then talk about unity,” Speaking at a workers’ event, Uddhav said,

Even though there has always been tension between the two parties and their workers, talks about Uddhav and Raj Thackeray coming together never really stopped. Shiv Sena broke away MNS corporators, and in return, MNS responded strongly. Both parties have even contested elections against each other. Yet, the idea that they might unite someday has always remained a topic of discussion.

Raj Thackeray made it clear that his earlier decision to leave Shiv Sena in 2005 wasn’t like the recent rebellion led by Eknath Shinde. “I left when I had support, but I couldn’t work under anyone except Balasaheb Thackeray. I never had a problem working with Uddhav.” He ended by saying, “If Maharashtra wants us to unite, let the people speak. Ego won’t come in the way.”

This new development comes as the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, formed to oppose the BJP, continues to struggle after a heavy loss in last year’s state elections. Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have had a complicated relationship. Both were once part of Shiv Sena, founded by Balasaheb Thackeray Uddhav’s father and Raj’s uncle. Raj, known for his fiery speeches, was seen as Balasaheb Thackeray’s natural successor. But Balasaheb chose Uddhav, known for his calm and strategic style, to lead the party. This led to Raj’s exit and the creation of the MNS in 2005. Now, after years of rivalry, the two cousins may be ready to join forces again.

Minister Sanjay Shirsat (Shivsena)

“It was Uddhav Thackeray’s ego that caused the split in the family. Raj Thackeray never wanted to leave the party, nor did he ever speak in that direction. It’s unlikely that Uddhav Thackeray will join hands with Raj in the future because their ideologies are now very different. Uddhav Thackeray seems more inclined to align with Sharad Pawar, the Congress, and other opposition parties.”

MP Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena UBT)

“We have heard Raj Thackeray’s statement—both Uddhav Thackeray and I. He has spoken with Maharashtra’s interest in mind. So, it won’t take long to resolve past differences. If Raj Thackeray takes the first step and initiates a conversation, we will not avoid it.”

Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule (BJP State President)

“It is up to the leaders of each party to decide who they want to form an alliance with. If Raj Thackeray feels he should ally with Uddhav Thackeray, then the BJP has no reason to interfere in their decision.”

Possible reasons for Uddhav and Raj Thackeray to come together:

Fight for political survival – Both parties are struggling to stay relevant and may need each other for support.

Strong public sentiment for unity – Many people want the two brothers to unite for the sake of the Marathi

Upcoming Mumbai civic elections – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are near, and joining hands could boost their chances.

Desire among party workers – Workers from both Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS also want to work together and are supportive of unity.

Challenge to Mahayuti (BJP-led alliance) – If the Thackeray brothers unite, they could pose a serious challenge to the ruling Mahayuti in Mumbai.
