When you think of South Indian comfort food, rasam rice instantly comes to mind. This simple, tangy, and spiced preparation is loved for its soul-soothing warmth and digestive benefits. Whether you are feeling under the weather or simply craving something light and flavorful, rasam rice never disappoints. Let’s learn how to prepare this classic dish in your own kitchen.
Ingredients You Will Need
For the Rasam:
● 2 medium tomatoes, chopped

● 1/2 cup cooked toor dal (pigeon peas)

● 3 cups water

● 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp

● 2 teaspoons rasam powder

● 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

● Salt to taste

● 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder (optional)

● Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

For Tempering:
● 1 teaspoon mustard seeds

● 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

● 2 dried red chilies

● 1 sprig curry leaves

● A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

● 1 tablespoon ghee or oil

For the Rice:
● 1 cup short-grain rice (like sona masuri or ponni rice)

● 2 cups water

Preparation Steps
1. Cook the Rice:
Rinse the rice thoroughly. In a pressure cooker or pot, cook the rice with 2 cups of water until soft. Keep aside.

2. Make the Rasam:
In a pot, add chopped tomatoes, tamarind pulp, turmeric powder, salt, and 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil and let it cook until the raw smell of tamarind disappears.

3. Add Dal and Rasam Powder:
Mash the cooked toor dal and mix it with 1 cup of water to make it pourable. Add this to the boiling rasam along with rasam powder. Simmer for about 5–7 minutes. You can also add black pepper powder for extra heat.

4. Prepare Tempering:
Heat ghee in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Next, add cumin seeds, red chilies, curry leaves, and asafoetida. Fry for a few seconds until aromatic.

5. Combine:
Pour this tempering into the rasam and switch off the heat. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

6. Serving:
Place a serving of hot rice in a bowl and pour generous ladles of rasam over it. Mix well. Rasam rice pairs beautifully with papad, pickle, or a simple vegetable stir-fry.

Tips for Perfect Rasam Rice
● Adjust tamarind and rasam powder to your taste preference.

● Use freshly ground black pepper for enhanced flavor.

● If you like a thinner rasam, add more water as needed.

● Always temper in ghee for a richer aroma.
