CSK’s 2025 IPL Journey Ends in Disappointment Despite Final Victory
The 2025 IPL season ended on a bittersweet note for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While the team wrapped up their campaign with a commanding 83-run win over Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the overall season turned out to be the worst in the franchise’s history.
Batting first, CSK posted an impressive 230/5 thanks to explosive knocks from young players like Ayush Mahatre, Urvil Patel, Devon Conway, and Dewald Brevis. In reply, Gujarat collapsed for just 147 in 18.3 overs, handing CSK a much-needed win. But despite this final triumph, CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time ever in IPL history.
CSK’s Fall from GloryThis season marked a historic low for the team that’s known for its consistency. CSK had previously finished 9th in 2022, but 2025 saw them slump even further to 10th place. The campaign started with a victory but quickly unraveled into a string of losses.
Shockingly, CSK failed to dominate even at their home ground, Chepauk Stadium—long considered a fortress. Out of five home games, the team lost four. Delhi Capitals defeated them in Chennai for the first time in 15 years, RCB did it after 17 years, and Sunrisers Hyderabad also registered their first-ever win at Chepauk.
Underperformance Across DepartmentsThe team’s poor run was due to underwhelming performances in both batting and bowling. While Shivam Dube (357 runs) and Ravindra Jadeja (301 runs) showed some consistency with the bat, most others failed to deliver. Among bowlers, Noor Ahmad was the standout with 24 wickets. In contrast, veterans like Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja couldn't make much of an impact.
The leadership saw changes too. After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, MS Dhoni took over the captaincy mid-season, but even the legendary leader couldn't turn things around. CSK won just 4 out of 14 matches.
A Glimpse of Hope at the EndThe final match brought a silver lining, thanks to the strong performance by youngsters and contributions from Devon Conway and Brevis. Still, this late revival wasn’t enough to compensate for the overall season.
Despite the final win, CSK’s IPL 2025 will be remembered as their most disheartening campaign to date—a season full of setbacks, missed opportunities, and a fall from their usual glory.
