Bhojpuri actor and singer Pawan Singh, known as the “Power Star” of the industry, is now making headlines not just for his cinematic work but also for stepping into the political arena. He recently appeared at the Satta Sammelan Bihar event organized by TV9 Bharatvarsh, where prominent figures from politics and entertainment gathered to discuss key issues ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
During the session, Pawan Singh addressed many topics — from Bollywood to Bhojpuri cinema — and made a strong statement about the image of the Bhojpuri industry. He described Bhojpuri cinema as the "cleanest" film industry at present, despite its reputation for double meaning lyrics and bold content.
When asked about some of his popular songs like "Rati Diya Buta Ke Piya Kya Kya Kiya" and "Mara Goli Ta Lehanga Lahak Jaai", which are often criticized for their suggestive lyrics, Singh responded lightheartedly at first, saying, “Don’t trap me.” However, he went on to clarify his stance, saying, “We all belong to the entertainment world. An artist is someone who can make people laugh and cry. That’s our job.”
Pawan Singh further defended Bhojpuri films by comparing them with other regional and mainstream film industries. He said that while Bhojpuri is often targeted for vulgarity, the reality is quite different. According to him, “Right now, our Bhojpuri industry is the cleanest, but unfortunately it has been labeled unfairly.”
He also pointed out the dressing style in Bhojpuri cinema as a counterpoint. “The heroines in Bhojpuri films don’t wear the kind of clothes seen in many other language films. Many even refuse to wear revealing clothes, and still the industry gets criticized,” he said.
On the subject of obscenity in Bhojpuri content, Pawan Singh admitted that while the image of the industry has been questioned, he personally wants to lead a change. “I want to start a trend to clean up the Bhojpuri industry. But this won’t happen with just one artist — the entire industry needs to come together and make this effort,” he concluded.
Pawan Singh’s remarks have sparked discussion among audiences and within the industry, as he attempts to reframe the narrative surrounding Bhojpuri cinema while preparing for a new phase in his political journey.
