Honoring Heroes: Police Commemoration Day on October 21 at the National Police Memorial

On October 21, India will observe Police Commemoration Day, honoring the bravery of ten policemen who lost their lives in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. This day serves as a tribute to all police martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation.

To acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of police personnel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Police Memorial (NPM) in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, on Police Commemoration Day in 2018. The memorial symbolizes national identity, pride, and unity among police forces, reinforcing their commitment to safeguard the country, even at the cost of their lives.

The NPM features a 30-foot granite monolith cenotaph representing the strength and selfless service of police personnel. The 'Wall of Valour' honors the names of martyrs who died in the line of duty since India’s independence. Additionally, a museum at the memorial provides an evolving exhibition on the history of policing in India.

Open to the public every day except Mondays, the NPM serves as a place of reverence for police personnel and citizens alike. Every Saturday and Sunday evening, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) conduct band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies at the memorial, starting an hour before sunset.

Across the country, Police Commemoration Day is observed with ceremonies paying homage to police martyrs. The main function takes place at the NPM, typically presided over by the Union Home Minister. A joint parade of CAPFs and Delhi Police honors the martyrs, with dignitaries, including retired Directors General of Police and Members of Parliament, laying wreaths in tribute. Following this, the Union Home Minister addresses the assembly, reflecting on the sacrifices made and the challenges faced by law enforcement.

From October 22 to 30, various commemorative events will be organized at the NPM, including visits by the families of martyrs, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, and runs for the martyrs. Blood donation camps and essay and painting competitions will also take place, showcasing the sacrifice and valor of police personnel. Similar events will be held by police forces across the nation during this period.
