A doctor has described the six Covid symptoms he is seeing in patients as the virus circulates at medium levels in the UK. The latest wave of infections is thought to be driven by the new XFG, or Stratus, and NB.1.8.1, or Nimbus variants. Dr Naveed Asif, a GP at The London General Practice, said sufferers were displaying similar symptoms to those seen with previous variants and common cold or flu viruses.
He said: "While the emergence of new variants can raise concerns, the UK Health Security Agency reports no evidence that these strains cause more severe disease or that current vaccines are less effective. However, vigilance is necessary, particularly for vulnerable populations. It's important for individuals to stay informed and take appropriate precautions."
The six symptoms Dr Asif listed were: a severe sore throat (often described as a razor blade sensation), fatigue, mild cough, headaches, running nose and exhaustion.
He urged people to seek medical care if they experience symptoms, "especially if those symptoms worsen or if they have underlying health conditions that increase their risk".
Underlying health conditions that increase risk of severe Covid-19 include conditions affecting the heart, lungs and kidneys.
This includes chronic lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic kidney disease. Other risk factors include obesity, cancer and certain liver diseases.
Dr Asif added: "Additionally, consultation with a GP is recommended if they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for a variant or if they have specific health concerns."
The medic also shared some advice to help people reduce their risk of infection. He said people should maintain good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing and using hand sanitiser, get vaccinated, and wear masks in crowded or indoor settings.
He also suggested avoiding large gatherings and maintaining physical distancing, exercising outdoors when possible, and covering your mouth or nose when sneezing.
