When it comes to sandwich fillings, there's a world of flavours to explore, but sometimes, you can't beat the comforting simplicity of a classic egg sandwich. It's quick to make, packed with protein, and always satisfying. That said, it can occasionally fall flat on flavour.
There's one ingredient, however, that can fix that. Strawberry jam is not something you'd usually think of, but it gives the sandwich a new level of flavour without overpowering anything.
Kelly Senyei, who runs the recipe site, Just a Taste, called strawberry jam her "secret ingredient."
She wrote: "It's sweet, savoury and totally delicious. One bite, and you'll see why this is the best egg sandwich recipe ever!
She added: "It lends a critical sweet note to balance out the savoury elements."
The natural sweetness and slight tanginess of the strawberry jam pairs really well with the creamy, mild flavour of the eggs. The fruity notes add a fresh burst that can brighten up the whole sandwich.
The jam will also be a plus in terms of texture by adding a smooth, sticky layer that complements the soft, fluffy texture of the eggs and bread, making each bite more interesting.
Senyei puts her own spin on the dish by melting cheddar cheese, which perfectly complements the sweetness of the strawberry jam.
She layers fried eggs, and two tablespoons of strawberry jam, and if you're feeling adventurous, adds crispy bacon on brioche bread, creating a flavour that's rich, salty, and sweet all at once.
To switch things up, try raspberry or fig jam instead of strawberry. You can also toss in some sautéed spinach or onions for an extra layer of flavour.
The combination of egg and jam might sound unusual at first, but once you try it, it just works. The flavours balance each other and turn a sometimes bland egg sandwich into something much more interesting with a sweet twist.
