An industry expert has shared a cost-free method to combat dampness in homes. Which?, the UK's non-profit consumer champion, is always on the lookout for ways to help Brits save money and maximise their resources.
On Saturday, November 8, Which? took to its TikTok account to share a German-approved method of home ventilation known as Stoßluften. This technique involves opening multiple windows and doors wide for approximately five to ten minutes, several times a day.
The expert advised: "Have you got a damp house? Well this is what the Germans would do about it - and it's basically free. Some ways of conquering damp can be expensive, or require a fair bit of DIY."
"The Germans have a great habit that anyone can get into - shock ventilation. Wrap up warm, run around the house and open all your windows wide for five minutes twice a day. Yes, even in the freezing cold.
"The warm damp air in your home will quickly get replaced with cold, dry air. When you're sealed back up again, the temperature should quickly get back to comfortable.
"Now the moisture in the air is banished and won't be condensing in damp patches on your walls and windows."
The method sparked debate among commenters, with many sharing their personal experiences.
One user commented: "Wife does it everyday in winter no mould in the house at all."
Another person praised: "Great post, well done you."
A third chimed in: "I do that in London and it works most of the time. It doesn't work when it's raining outside. I use humidity monitors to check."
Others warned that this trick might not be as effective due to the UK's typically humid climate.
One individual pointed out: "Doesn't work in the UK or Ireland due to the dampness in the air through winter. The Europeans have the benefit of dry cold."
Another echoed: "Noooooo it doesn't work in the UK ..the humidity here is far greater."
