An upcoming historical action series starring an iconic Game of Thrones star has released its first trailer - and it looks like an absolute must-watch.

This upcoming epic drama releasing later this summer on Apple TV+ promises to uncover the untold story of Hawaii and its people like never before.

Hollywood star and Khal Drogo himself, Jason Momoa, not only stars but co-created and co-wrote each episode of the series with partners Thomas Pa'a Sibbett and Doug Jung.

It also features a primarily Polynesian cast, including Star Wars legend Temuera Morrison, Kaos star Cliff Curtis and The Night Agent's Luciane Buchanan.

In a first-look, Momoa looks worlds away from his classic role in the HBO fantasy series, decked out in traditional Hawaiian wear, including a striking headdress and crimson robe.

Described as a "passion project" for Momoa, Chief of War will also have a "moving" original score by Hans Zimmer and James Everingham.

A synopsis reads: "Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Hawai'i, the nine-episode series based on true events, follows warrior Ka'iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century."

The first trailer was unveiled today (Thursday, 22nd May) and is already attracting excited reactions from streamers eager to tune in this August.

One Reddit user commented: "The whole show is in native Hawaiian with subtitles.

"Such a ballsy and cool move to make and for Apple to greenlight. I'm looking forward to this."

Someone else replied: "Yoooooo wtf is this? This came out of nowhere for me. Hawaiian Apocalypto staring Jason Mamoa? Instant yes."

And a third wrote: "Man I am so excited to watch this, I would be excited just for the setting, but it also looks really good and Apple has a very good track record for shows."

The trailer was also generating plenty of excitement on YouTube, with one person in the comments exclaiming: "FINALLY a show about the Kingdom of Hawaii!!"

While a final fan said: "I don't know who is responsible and keeps pumping these great series out of Apple +, but keep doing what you are doing!"
