An illegal immigrant has been apprehended after allegedly penning a threatening letter to the U.S. government, in which he vowed to assassinate President Donald Trump as revenge for deporting his family.
The authorities have identified the man as 54 year old Mexican national Ramon Morales Reyes, who reportedly sent the menacing letter to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on 21 May.
In his chilling message, Reyes stated that he would "self-deport" after shooting President Trump "in the head" at one of his rallies, according to officials.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Reyes is currently being held in ICE custody at a jail in Wisconsin, awaiting his removal proceedings.
His handwritten letter read: "We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans. We have done more for this country than you white people.", reports
"You have been deporting my family, and I think it is time Donald J. Trump gets what he has coming to him."
Reyes allegedly wrote that he would "self-deport myself back to Mexico.
"But not before I use my 30-yard 6 to shoot your precious president in the head," the letter threatened.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem condemned the threats and called on the media and politicians to "tone down their rhetoric" in light of the "repeated attempts on President Trump's life.
"Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars," Noem declared.
"This threat comes not even a year after President Trump was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, and less than two weeks after former FBI Director Comey called for the President's assassination...I will continue to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of President Trump."
The DHS revealed that Reyes had a criminal record and had illegally entered the U.S. on at least nine occasions between 1998 and 2005.
"His criminal record includes arrests for felony hit and run, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse modifier," stated the DHS.
