A butcher has recommended trying out a sauce on a bacon sandwich which has been described as a "game changer", and it is not brown or ketchup. Appletons Butchers, which has branches in Ripon, Knaresborough, and Wetherby, posted a video on TikTok of one of its employees showing off some "beautiful old-style bacon". Its caption read: "Here's the very, very nice Toby asking one very important question: what sauce are you putting on your Saturday morning bacon sandwich??? Oxford sauce, brown or tomato?" Toby explained that Oxford Sauce is "very, very nice". Brown and ketchup are, of course, alternative options, and are selected by Brits up and down the country every day.
Oxford Sauce was created by Baron Pouget as he tried to make a new table sauce, which would be produced in his company's kitchen in Stanley Road, Oxford. The condiment's website explains: "The recipe came more or less by accident whilst experimenting when the decimal point on the chilli content was misread at the time of conception.
"It goes without saying that it's pretty hot but its complex flavour has developed a loyal following."
Its ingredients include tomatoes, spirit vinegar, water, molasses, date paste, sugar, salt, tamarind, anchovy paste, modified maize starch, garlic powder, mustard powder, Birdseye chillies, cumin, celery and Black Pepper, according to Wine and Such.
Some viewers of Appletons' video were familiar with Oxford Sauce, with one commenting: "Oxford Sauce is a game changer. [It's] amazing."
However, others were less so.
One person wrote: "What's Oxford sauce?
"Never heard of that."
But these three sauces are not the only options.
A Reddit account wrote: "I don't really like either, I prefer mustard.
"I always thought that was a common condiment to add, but people seem to act surprised when I mention that's what I have/like."
Another user said: "No sauce at all!
"Just pop the bread in the pan for a few seconds after taking the bacon out, and give it a few swirls.
"Then it's bread, bacon, bread. Nothing else needed."
Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae Sauce was also mentioned.
One person wrote: "Was always an HP man but my ex talked me into using Reggae one time and I've never looked back."
