Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit royal life five years ago, moving overseas to the US to carve their own path. After expressing a desire to be financially independent, it came as no surprise when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began making deals, with one of the first being a Netflix deal worth £78million [$100m].
The five-year deal, which was signed in 2020, helped fund the couple's Montecito lifestyle and resulted in a number of shows being produced, with the 2022 docuseries Harry and Meghan being the most successful. However, with ratings for other shows as Polo flopping, it may not come as a surprise that the Netflix deal won't be renewed when it comes to an end in September.
While the reason for this has not been confirmed by Netflix itself, one royal expert has exclusively told Express.co.uk that he thinks there is only one explanation.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that the end of the deal is "proof" that the couple are only useful to Netflix when they "attack the Royal Family".
Talking about the rumoured end of the Netflix deal, Fitzwilliams said: "This, if true, is absolute proof the Sussexes are useless unless they attack the Royal Family.
"The $100 million they reportedly received over 5 years for this contract was pivotal for them. They lost their $20 million Spotify contract and Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan's podcast for Lemonada Media, reportedly won't be renewed.
"With Love, Meghan, her cookery series, was 383 in Netflix's ratings which is dreadful."
Mr Fitzwilliams also told Express.co.uk that while Netflix may no longer be interested in the couple, other media companies might, especially if the couple produce memoirs like Harry's 2023 memoir Spare.
He said: "What would sell is another memoir. Harry told us when Spare was released that he cut 400 pages as they would be toxic for the Royal Family.
"The royals will be concerned that the Sussexes could publish another memoir and this time it could be Meghan, or Harry could write a memoir about his early life."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle haven't publicly addressed the end of their Netflix deal yet.
