Man Utd chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes feelings towards the Glazers crystal clear

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has leapt to the defence of the Glazer family's controversial reign at Old Trafford. The American owners have faced relentless criticism from supporters ever since their leveraged takeover in 2005 left the club burdened with substantial debt - now standing at £725million.

Multiple supporter groups mounted fierce opposition to the transaction two decades ago. British tycoon Ratcliffe purchased a 27.7 per cent shareholding in United through a $1.2bn agreement at the beginning of 2024 following negotiations with the Glazer family.

The Ineos chief executive was granted control over football operations and strategic decisions at the club. The 72-year-old has now offered his assessment of United's divisive majority shareholders during an appearance on The Times' Business Podcast.

"They get a bad rap... but they are really nice people and they are really passionate about the club," he stated.

When questioned about his working relationship with the family, Ratcliffe revealed they were happy to allow him to assume command. "That probably sums it up," he continued.

"We're local, and they're the other side of the pond. That's a long way away to try and manage a football club as big as complex as Manchester United. We're here with feet on the ground."

Ratcliffe has been powerless to reverse United's declining form on the pitch since his Ineos organisation assumed responsibility for football matters at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils ended up 15th last season - comfortably their poorest showing in the Premier League era. One significant decision made by the British owner was to appoint Ruben Amorim as head coach, a move that has been scrutinised due to United's ongoing struggles under his leadership.

However, Ratcliffe dismissed any speculation about the Portuguese manager being shown the door.

When questioned about the possibility of the Glazers instructing him to dismiss Amorim, Ratcliffe firmly stated that such a situation would not occur.

Following the international break, United are set to face Liverpool away on Sunday, 19 October, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm UK time.
