Man Utd 'make approach for £34m Inter star' who was 'told to leave' by his captain

Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in signing Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu. The midfielder faces an uncertain future at the San Siro after being publicly told to leave by club captain Lautaro Martinez.

The Red Devils have already bolstered their ranks this summer with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and they remain locked in negotiations with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo as well.

Although a No. 9 is also among the priorities at Old Trafford, United also appear to have turned their attention to reinforcements in midfield.

According to SportsMediaset and DAZN reporter Orazio Accomando, the Red Devils have made contact with the representatives of Inter playmaker Calhanoglu to register an interest in acquiring his services.

Galatasaray were previously leading the race to sign the Turkey international, but they feel they have been priced out of a move as it stands, with Inter demanding £34million to part ways with the 31-year-old. Fulham have also made contact with the midfielder, and he is not short of interest from the Saudi Pro League either.

Calhanoglu faces an uncertain future with Inter after being called out by teammate Martinez at the Club World Cup. The Argentine said: "I want to fight for top titles. Who wants to stay at Inter, very good and let's fight. Who doesn't want to stay, they can go and leave.

"We need players who want to be here. We are wearing an important jersey. We need top mentality or please, leave." Inter Milan President Giuseppe Marotta then clarified Martinez's comments, revealing that they were aimed at Calhanoglu.

He said: "Lautaro's message on players who don't want to stay? He didn't say... but I'll say that. It was for Hakan Çalhanoglu. We will speak with Hakan. If there will be conditions to part ways, we will do it with zero problems."

Calhanoglu has since released a statement of his own on Instagram where he insisted that he has never said that he was unhappy at Inter and that he hopes that how he has snubbed previous offers showcased that he recognises the importance of wearing the shirt. However, with the situation remaining tense, United may feel it is the ideal opportunity for them to make their move.
