Mansfield Town release Lucas Akins statement after footballer jailed for killing cyclist

are "considering" their position over forward Lucas Akins after for causing the death of a cyclist in 2022. The 36-year-old will serve half the sentence in custody before being released on licence.

In March, Akins admitted responsibility for the death of Adrian Daniel, 33. He died of what were described as "catastrophic" head injuries 10 days after being hit by the footballer's Mercedes in March 2022. Hours after the sentence was confirmed on Thursday, the League One club released a statement.

"Mansfield Town Football Club acknowledges today's decision by Leeds Crown Court concerning Lucas Akins following a tragic road traffic accident in March 2022," they said.

"Mansfield Town Football Club offers its sincere and deepest condolences to the family of Adrian Daniel at this difficult time. The club is considering its position with regards to Lucas and will be making no further comment at this stage."

In March, the club was severely criticised for . Just hours beforehand, the Grenada international had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Leeds Crown Court.

The player joined the club from Burton Albion in 2022. He's since made 124 appearances for Mansfield in all competitions, scoring 24 goals.

When asked afterwards if he was right to select Akins, Mansfield manager Nigel Clough refused to comment on the situation. However, he admitted that the club was aware of his legal situation.

He said: "We can't comment on it I'm afraid. We've known about it for some time. It's not just happened but we're not in a position to comment."
