Porridge has long been a beloved breakfast classic in the UK, comforting millions every morning with its warm, creamy texture. Whether topped with fruit, honey, sugar, or a sprinkle of cinnamon, it's a simple dish that never fails to satisfy. In fact, research from Mintel in 2013 revealed that nearly half of Brits (49%) regularly enjoy porridge, with almost a quarter (23%) reaching for it daily.
There is one surprising ingredient, however, that could take your porridge from ordinary to extraordinary, tahini. Tahini is a smooth paste made from ground sesame seeds and is well known in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. TikTok food creators, Freya and Charlie, have recently showcased their indulgent twist on porridge by stirring creamy tahini into warm oats and topping it with sticky, caramelised bananas.

This blend brings a rich, nutty flavour and a silky texture that transforms plain porridge into a decadent treat.
If you're ready to try this delicious twist on your breakfast, here is a simple recipe that serves two. Start by cooking the oats with milk and water, adding two tablespoons of tahini, half a teaspoon of salt, and if you're feeling fancy add two teaspoons of maple syrup or agave, and a quarter teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Stir the mixture gently until it becomes thick and creamy. While the porridge cooks, melt one tablespoon of butter in a pan and add two bananas, sliced lengthways, with a half tablespoon of brown sugar.
Cook them until they are golden and caramelised and then pour the creamy porridge into bowls, then top with the sticky bananas.
Next, drizzle with maple syrup or honey and sprinkle with cacao nibs and a handful of chopped nuts for some extra crunch. Finally, finish with an extra spoonful of tahini for that rich, nutty kick.
Incorporating tahini into your porridge not only adds delicious flavour but also packs your breakfast with health benefits. It contains more protein per serving than milk or many nuts, along with important B vitamins that boost energy and brain function.
Tahini is also rich in vitamin E, which supports heart health, and minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron, and manganese, all essential for strong bones and overall wellness.
The paste is loaded with antioxidants called lignans including sesamin which have been linked to reduced inflammation and a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
The healthy fats in tahini, mostly monounsaturated fats, also have anti-inflammatory effects that benefit the heart and your overall health.
