British holidaymakers looking for a city break that doesn't require taxis, metros or long treks will be delighted to learn that the world's most walkable city is just a couple of hours' flight away. According to a new global study by financial site Insider Monkey, Florence, Italy has claimed the top spot as the most walkable destination in the world.
The picturesque Tuscan capital edged out other iconic cities thanks to its compact layout, high safety ratings, and clean air, as well as the rare bonus of having its top five tourist attractions all within a 10-minute walk of one another.
The research took into account a variety of metrics, including pedestrian infrastructure, proximity of major sights, air quality, and overall safety.
Florence outshone the competition in nearly every category, making it the perfect place for travellers hoping to ditch the itinerary and simply explore on foot.
Wander a few minutes in any direction from the historic city centre and you'll stumble across world-famous landmarks like the Duomo di Firenze, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo's David.
All of these attractions are nestled within a snug radius, making Florence a haven for culture lovers who prefer sightseeing at a strolling pace.
Insider Monkey said: "Florence prioritises cleanliness, evident in its well-maintained piazzas and the banks of the Arno River.
"The air quality in Florence has a score of 44 and has a slight Mediterranean breeze to it. On the other hand, the safety score for Florence is 60.24.
"You can also walk through Central Florence in only two hours; some walking tours of the entire city take only around 6-7 hours."
The findings come as more travellers seek out slower, more sustainable ways to explore Europe.
With the environmental and health benefits of walking, Florence's top ranking is likely to draw even more footloose travellers this summer.
Direct flights from the UK to Florence take around two hours, with budget airlines offering routes from London, Manchester, and other major cities. For Brits keen to get their steps in while soaking up Renaissance beauty, Florence may be the perfect summer escape.
