's Cave in Knaresborough, is said to be England's , attracting visitors since 1630. For hundreds of years, people from around the UK have been coming to see the well where the water is said to magically turn items to stone. It is also the mythical birthplace of England's most famous prophetess, Ursula Southeil, better known under the name, Mother Shipton.
The legend says that she was born in a cave in 1488 in Knaresborough. She was known for her herbal remedies and claimed ability to predict future events like the Great Fire of London and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The prophetess became a local legend, and her story which blends history and folklore, has been told for centuries.
Inside the cave, visitors are greeted by a statue of Mother Shipton which tells her life story.
Objects placed in the Petrifying Well are said to turn to stone because the water is rich in minerals, especially calcium carbonate.
As the water flows over the items, it leaves behind a mineral coating that gradually builds up.
This process is similar to how stalactites and stalagmites form in caves though this takes place much faster due to the high mineral content.

The Mother Shipton website says a small teddy bear would take around three to five months to petrify and turn into stone.
There is also a Wishing Well, which is fed the same magical waters as the Petrifying Well where for more than 300 years, visitors have been claiming that their wishes have come true.
At the far end of the site lies Beech Avenue, which holds the oldest and tallest beech trees in the country, planted in 1739 by Sir Henry Slingsby.
The site is open every day from March 31 to November 2, and admission prices vary by season. Off-peak rates are usually £32 per car for up to five people, while peak rates are £39 per car.
Pedestrians or additional passengers are charged £11 during off-peak times, and £15 per pedestrian during peak times such as weekends, bank holidays, and events.
