is only getting more popular with passengers having the ability to sail the world without having to fly. Whilst some people may think its similar to any other holiday, it can feel very different, especially on your first cruise.
This makes researching a cruise very important for embarking on one. According to a cruise expert, there are several mistakes many people make before heading on their first , including overpacking, ignoring the daily planner, and not adhering to the dress code.
1. OverpackingMike Graham, Destination2's cruise expert, said: "One of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make is overpacking.
"While it's tempting to prepare for every possible scenario, you definitely won't need six formal outfits.
"Cruise ships are getting more casual, so stick to versatile pieces. Trust me, you'll spend more time in your swimwear or comfy clothes than in that tux you thought you'd need."
2. Ignoring the daily plannerAnother common mistake is ignoring the daily planner, which shows all of the activities on board for that day.
The expert said: "Make sure to research what your cruise ship has to offer before you board.
"Many cruise lines recommend booking shore excursions, dining reservations and spa treatments in advance.
"They often provide an app or personalised planner to help you with this, and it's a good idea to take advantage of it, as popular experiences can fill up quickly."
3. Heading to the buffet at peak timesWhen it comes to the cruise buffet, timing is everything, and one of the most common mistakes made is arriving at peak hours.
If you want to skip the crowds, hit the buffet just after it opens or right before closing.
The expert added: "Another hack is not to be afraid to ask when certain dishes are freshly made or coming out. They're often happy to share tips on when the best options will be available, so you can swoop in before they disappear."
4. Annoying cruise workersThe cruise expert continued: "When it coms to cruise faux pas, sunbed hogging is one of the biggest offences. Leaving your towel on a sunbed all day not only frustrates other guests but also the crew.
"Ignoring the dress code can also cause frustration. Cruise lines often have formal or semi-formal nights where a smarter outfit is required.
"Showing up in flip-flops or your favourite budgie smugglers will definitely raise some eyebrows. Make sure to check the event details and pack accordingly to avoid any awkward moment."
