AGRA: Days after a juice vendor in UP's Aligarh was left stunned by Rs 7.8 crore income tax notice, labourer Yogesh Sharma, 40, at a lock spring unit in the city received Rs 11 crore I-T department notice on Monday.
The I-T notice purportedly cited a "sale of over Rs 11 crore for the financial year 2019-20, with a tax of over Rs 89 lakh at 8% per annum".
"I received the I-T notice dated March 20, 2025 today (Monday). I work as a labourer and make lock springs for livelihood. Forget about Rs 11 cr, I've never witnessed anything even close to that amount in my life. I reside in a small rented house and am currently grappling with financial difficulties. As I could not pay the power bill, my electricity was disconnected," Sharma said.
"My wife has been afflicted with lung disease for the past two years, further putting pressure on my fragile financial condition. I request the state and the higher authorities to examine my case judiciously," he said.
According to Sharma, this isn't the first such instance. He had earlier received a demand of Rs 10 lakh a few months ago. He pointed out that only a proper investigation can reveal the truth.
Earlier this month, a 35-year-old juice vendor in Aligarh was left puzzled after being served an I-T notice of Rs 7.8 cr — an amount exceeding his earnings. Raees Ahmed, who operates a seasonal juice cart near the civil court and earns Rs 500-600 a day, received the notice, delivered via courier.
Suspecting identity theft, Ahmed lodged a police complaint at Civil Lines, after which a case against an unknown person was registered, and a formal investigation was ordered.
