MUMBAI: A senior inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station was caught red handed accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday.
The accused officer, identified as Baburao Madhukar Deshmukh , 57, has been booked under various sections of prevention of corruption act and he will be produced before the special ACB court on Wednesday.
According to officials, the complainant, a 41-year-old trustee of a local trust in Shivaji Nagar in eastern part of the city, had approached the police after a group of individuals illegally entered the school premises managed by the trust on August 15, 2024.
The intruders had forcibly broken the gate lock and occupied the premises. Despite filing complaints with the Shivajinagar Police and the Charity Commissioner, the complainant alleged that no effective action was being taken to prevent the recurring intrusions.
The complainant further informed the ACB that Inspector Deshmukh had demanded a bribe of Rs. 3 lakh in exchange for providing police protection and ensuring that the accused parties did not re-enter the premises until the Charity Commissioner’s office issued a final decision.
Following the complaint, the ACB set up a verification process on Tuesday, during which the accused officer agreed to settle the matter for Rs. 2.5 lakh. Subsequently, a trap was laid, and Deshmukh was caught red-handed while accepting the first instalment of Rs. 1 lakh on Tuesday.
A team of ACB is also conducting searches of Deshmukh’s residence.
