Cities across the US witnessed widespread demonstrations over the weekend, as thousands took to the streets to voice their opposition to President Donald Trump 's policies. This marked the largest coordinated nationwide protest since the president assumed office in January, highlighting a growing wave of dissent. Protesters rallied against a range of Trump administration initiatives, including trade tariffs and accusations of fascism.
Elon Musk says ‘protesters do not know why are they protesting’
The protests garnered further attention after tech billionaire Elon Musk, a vocal Trump supporter, criticised the demonstrations, alleging the presence of " puppetmasters " manipulating the protesters.
Musk's comments followed the circulation of a viral video showing protesters struggling to articulate their reasons for labeling President Trump a “fascist.”
"The problem is the puppetmasters, not the puppets, as the latter have no idea why they are even there," Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by the video footage.
The video, captured by political strategist Ted Goodman in Washington D.C., featured protesters holding signs with slogans such as "The Fascist Trump Regime Must Go." When questioned about the basis for their accusations, several protesters offered vague or contradictory responses.
One protester, when asked why he believed Trump was a fascist, stated, "He just does everything he wants… He's a convicted felon, you know, that's all I know," while holding the aforementioned sign.
Another claimed Trump was "trying to control the media," but struggled to provide concrete examples. A third protester, holding a sign that read "End the Kastikokracy," was seen pulling out a printed sheet of paper to read the meaning of the slogan.
Musk shared this second video as well, saying, "He had to read the paper he was given to understand the sign he was holding."
The protests, dubbed "Hands Off" rallies, encompassed over 1,200 demonstrations nationwide. Participants voiced their opposition to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), reciprocal tariffs, federal layoffs and immigration reform.
