An 18-year-old resident of Florida faces charges after allegedly threatening an elderly woman with a machete at a Neptune Beach early voting location, according to local law enforcement officials.
Neptune Beach police chief Michael Key Jr reported during a Tuesday press conference that Caleb James Williams confronted two women at the polling site, including a 71-year-old, while holding a machete above his head.
The confrontation took place days before the November 5 presidential election between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris .
According to Jacksonville sheriff's office records, Williams is currently detained and faces charges of improperly displaying a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault against a senior citizen over 65 years old.
No legal representation for Williams has been identified at this time.
According to chief key, Williams accompanied six underage individuals who intended to "protest and oppose the opposing political side." Key did not specify if any other group members faced consequences for their actions.
"The group was there for no other reason but ill intentions - to cause a disturbance," Key said, denouncing the incident as an attack on voting rights .
During the press conference, Key showed evidence of Williams in a parking lot, displaying a photograph of him smiling while holding the machete up.
According to the Florida Times-Union's reporting, Williams participated in a group of Trump supporters who displayed a "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Trump" flag.
