As President Donald Trump recently crossed the 100-day mark of his second term and the administration celebrated it as nothing like his predecessors, a Wall Street Journal report said Trump expressed his frustration to an intimate group of dinner companions at his Mar-a-Lago resort. His frustration was mainly over foreign policy and his promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war that he has not been able to deliver.
"Trump spoke to a room of top donors at his Florida club last week, he described ending Russia’s war in Ukraine as a growing frustration that keeps him up at night, people in the room said," the Journal report by Josh Dawsey and Alexander Ward said.
"As he passes the 100-day mark of his second term with neither conflict closer to a resolution, negotiations to end Iran’s nuclear program stalled, and a trade war straining relationships with allies, Trump is finding solving the world’s problems more difficult than he had thought," the report added.
Trump's frustration with Putin
Trump said at the dinner that Putin was particularly tough to negotiate with and wanted the "whole thing", including Ukraine. The report said that Trump asked his advisers if they believed Putin had changed since Trump's last time in office. Trump also expressed surprise at some of Putin's military moves, including bombing areas with children.
The administration has publicly issued statements indicating that they will move on from the issue if the stalemate between Russia and Ukraine does not end.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said he would not hold talks with any Russian representative other than Putin himself. Zelenskyy said he would travel to Turkey after Putin suggested direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in response to the ceasefire-or-sanctions ultimatum given to Moscow by Kyiv’s European allies. Trump said he was open to going to Turkey, but the Kremlin has so far refused to say whether Putin – or anyone else – would go.
