Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has cautioned the United States over its recent actions and remarks, saying they have harmed China’s interests and interfered in its internal affairs, particularly on sensitive issues such as Taiwan.
His remarks came during a phone call with US secretary of state Marco Rubio, as confirmed by both the Chinese foreign ministry and the US state department.
Wang emphasised the importance of adhering to the “strategic guidance” of the two heads of state and fully implementing their consensus.
"To ensure that the two giant ships of China and the U.S. move forward together without deviating from their courses or losing speed, it is necessary to adhere unswervingly to the strategic guidance of the two heads of state," Wang said, according to a statement by China’s Foreign Ministry.
He expressed concern over recent US actions, stating they have “undermined China's legitimate rights and interests, interfered in China's internal affairs, and are detrimental to the improvement and development of China-US relations.”
Wang further urged the US to exercise caution in its words and actions, “especially on issues concerning China's core interests such as Taiwan.”
The Chinese side also framed the call as a timely opportunity to stabilise ties, highlighting historical cooperation between the two countries. “China and the US once fought side by side during World War II... in this new era, the two sides should work together for world peace and prosperity, tackle global challenges and shoulder their due responsibilities as major countries,” Wang added.
The call follows up on the July meeting between Wang and Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN regional forum in Malaysia. That meeting was described by both sides as positive, despite trade tensions .
According to the US state department, the call was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open communication. “Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of open and constructive communication on a range of bilateral issues,” Pigott said, adding that the discussion covered global and regional topics as a continuation of the talks in Kuala Lumpur.
The call comes amid rising trade tensions, with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, urging the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on China as a means of pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin. China, along with India, remains a major buyer of Russian oil, playing a key role in sustaining Russia’s economy during its ongoing military actions in Ukraine.
