Donald Trump , the Republican candidate, secured victory in Indiana's presidential election on Tuesday. Indiana, a consistently conservative state where Republicans have maintained control of the governorship for two decades, allocated its 11 electoral votes to Trump over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Indiana has demonstrated strong support for Trump throughout his three presidential campaigns. He garnered 57 per cent of the state's votes both in 2016, when he first won the presidency, and in 2020. The Associated Press announced Trump's victory at 7.00 pm EST.
Meanwhile, Republican Mark Messmer won Indiana’s 8th Congressional District seat, defeating Democrat Erik Hurt and retaining the post previously held by retiring Rep. Larry Bucshon. Messmer, formerly Indiana's state Senate majority leader, resigned from the Senate in September to focus on his congressional campaign.
In another race, Republican Mike Braun won the election for governor in the state. Braun, the Republican US Senator and wealthy founder of a national auto parts distribution company defeated Democratic candidate Jennifer McCormick. This win maintains the Republican Party's two-decade control of the governor's office.
Braun, who chose not to seek re-election to the Senate after serving one term, will take over from the term-limited Republican Governor Eric Holcomb. His opponent McCormick, who previously served as Indiana's schools superintendent under the Republican banner in 2016, later switched her allegiance to the Democratic Party in early 2021 due to disagreements over education policies.
