Mangaluru: A tense situation unfolded outside the Mangaluru District Jail as citizens staged a protest under the leadership of MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, demanding action over the alleged malfunctioning or misuse of mobile jammers within the prison premises.
The protest, which began as a peaceful gathering, escalated quickly as demonstrators attempted to lay siege to the jail, voicing concerns over security lapses and the continued issue of mobile phone signals affecting nearby areas.
A scuffle broke out between the police and the protestors when they tried to breach security barricades. In the chaos, several women protestors fell onto the road, causing brief panic among the crowd.
Former MCC (Mangaluru City Corporation) member Leelavathi Prakash reportedly collapsed during the incident and was immediately rushed to KMC Hospital for treatment.
Enraged by the situation, some protestors reportedly smashed mobile phones on the ground as a symbolic gesture of protest, expressing frustration over the jammer’s impact on public connectivity.
Police detained several protestors to bring the situation under control. Heavy security deployment was in place around the jail premises as a precautionary measure.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the situation, accusing authorities of negligence and failing to address the public’s concerns regarding the jail’s mobile jammer system.
